How it works — the substrate of thyroid hormone

Iodine is the essential raw material from which the body builds thyroid hormone. In the thyroid gland, iodine is attached to the tyrosine residues of the protein thyroglobulin to form thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) — the hormones that regulate metabolic rate, energy production, temperature and growth. The "tri-" and "tetra-" in T3 and T4 refer to the number of iodine atoms each carries; without adequate iodine the thyroid cannot manufacture them. Iodine is also concentrated in other tissues, including the breast.
