Thyroid & Metabolism

The thyroid is the body's metabolic thermostat — a small gland that sets the pace at which nearly every cell uses energy. But the part most people miss is that the thyroid mostly produces hormone in a storage form that has to be activated elsewhere in the body. Get that activation step wrong and you can have a "normal" thyroid on paper and still feel cold, flat and slow. Our thyroid & metabolism collection brings together the nutrients the gland and that activation step depend on.

How the thyroid actually works

The gland takes iodine and the amino acid tyrosine and assembles thyroid hormone, releasing it mostly as T4 — the storage form, which is largely inactive. The real work happens in the peripheral tissues, where enzymes called deiodinases convert T4 into the active hormone, T3. Those deiodinases are selenium-dependent, which is the crux: you can manufacture plenty of T4 and still run low on active T3 if conversion is poor. Two things commonly impair it:

  • Stress. Under sustained stress or illness the body diverts T4 toward reverse-T3, an inactive "brake" — one reason chronic stress leaves people feeling hypothyroid. See Adrenal & Nervous System Support.
  • Oxidative load. Making thyroid hormone generates hydrogen peroxide, and the gland relies on selenium-based glutathione peroxidase to neutralise it and protect itself — part of why selenium matters so much here.

The nutrients it depends on

  • Iodine — the raw material for the hormone, but a Goldilocks nutrient: both too little and too much disturb the gland, and in autoimmune thyroid conditions excess iodine can aggravate it. Best taken on professional advice (see precautions).
  • Selenium — powers the T4→T3 conversion and protects the gland; arguably the key thyroid mineral after iodine.
  • Tyrosine — the amino-acid backbone onto which iodine is attached to build the hormone. See Amino Acids.
  • Zinc & iron — further cofactors; iron is needed for thyroid peroxidase, the enzyme that assembles the hormone in the first place.

Who may benefit

People supporting healthy thyroid and metabolic function, those with low energy, cold intolerance or a sluggish metabolism, and anyone wanting the key thyroid nutrients covered. Because the thyroid, stress and gut all influence conversion, see also Energy.

Frequently asked questions

Why might I feel hypothyroid when my T4 is "normal"? Because the active hormone is T3, made by converting T4 in the tissues. If that selenium-dependent conversion is impaired — by low selenium or zinc, or high stress — you can carry adequate T4 and still be short on active T3.
Should I just take iodine? Not necessarily. Both too little and too much iodine disturb the thyroid, and in autoimmune thyroid disease extra iodine can worsen things — so it's best taken on professional advice.
Can these replace thyroid medication? No — they provide nutritional support and are not a substitute for prescribed treatment. Discuss any thyroid concern with your healthcare professional.
