Superfoods.

"Superfood" describes whole foods with an unusually high concentration of nutrients and phytochemicals per calorie — a convenient way to lift the nutrient density of the diet, used alongside (never instead of) real vegetables and their fibre. The more interesting question is how they work, and several do far more than just add vitamins. Our superfoods collection spans the most concentrated.

The main families — and what they actually do

  • Green foods (spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass) — rich in chlorophyll, whose structure closely mirrors haem (the core of haemoglobin). Spirulina's blue pigment, phycocyanin, is a notable antioxidant; chlorella's tough cell wall is studied for binding support, which is why it features in detox protocols. See Detoxification.
  • Antioxidant berries & beetroot — concentrated polyphenols; beetroot in particular supplies dietary nitrates that the body converts to nitric oxide for circulation. See Heart Health and Antioxidants.
  • Adaptogenic roots (maca, shilajit) — traditionally used for energy and vitality; shilajit is also a rich source of trace minerals and fulvic acid. See Energy.

Who may benefit

Anyone wanting to raise the nutrient density of their diet, support a busy lifestyle, or add a concentrated source of greens, antioxidants or plant protein.

Frequently asked questions

Do superfoods replace vegetables? No — they complement a whole-food diet; they don't replace the fibre and variety of real vegetables.
Spirulina or chlorella? Spirulina is higher in protein and easy to digest; chlorella has a cell wall studied for binding and is often used in detox support.
How do I use green powders? Blended into water, juice or smoothies daily — start small and build up.
