Magnesium

Magnesium is one of the most widely needed — and widely deficient — minerals in the modern diet. It acts as a cofactor in over 300 enzyme reactions, with central roles in energy (ATP) production, muscle and nerve function, the nervous system and a healthy stress response. Because around 99% of the body's magnesium sits inside cells rather than in the blood, the form you choose matters as much as the dose — different forms are absorbed differently and suit different goals. Our magnesium collection brings together every major form, so you can match the product to the need.

Choosing a form of magnesium

The form determines both how well magnesium is absorbed and what it's best suited to:

  • Magnesium glycinate — bound to the calming amino acid glycine; a popular evening choice for sleep, stress and muscle relaxation, and gentle on digestion.
  • Magnesium citrate — a well-absorbed organic form (used in clinically trialled preparations like Diasporal®) suited to general repletion and energy; also supports bowel regularity.
  • Magnesium orotate — the orotate carrier helps deliver magnesium into cells and toward the mitochondria, favoured for heart and cardiovascular support.
  • Magnesium threonate — studied for crossing into the brain, a choice for cognitive support.

Who may benefit

People with high stress loads, disrupted sleep, muscle tightness or cramps, low energy, or simply a magnesium-poor diet. Magnesium is also a key cofactor for activating vitamin D, so it's often paired with a D supplement.

Frequently asked questions

Which magnesium is best for sleep? Glycinate is the usual choice for evening use, as glycine itself is calming; threonate is another option for the mind. Many find magnesium pairs well with sleep-support herbs.
Which form for muscle cramps or tension? Glycinate and citrate are commonly used for muscle and neuromuscular support.
How much magnesium should I take? This depends on the form, your diet and your needs — if you're unsure, check with your healthcare professional.
