Hormonal Health.

Hormones are the body's messengers, and across the menstrual cycle and the stages of life their balance is in constant motion. When people think about hormonal support they tend to think only about making hormones — but just as important is how the body clears them. A great deal of hormonal symptom-picture comes down to that balance between production, signalling and clearance. Our hormonal health collection brings together the herbs and nutrients that work with the body's own regulation.

The clearance story — why the liver and gut matter

Used oestrogen doesn't just disappear; it's processed by the liver in two steps — first modified (Phase I), then packaged for excretion (Phase II) — and sent out via the gut. But clearance isn't guaranteed: certain gut bacteria produce an enzyme (β-glucuronidase) that can "un-package" oestrogen and send it back into circulation. So how much oestrogen you actually clear depends on both liver detoxification and gut balance. Nutrients that support this include DIM and indole-3-carbinol (from brassicas, nudging Phase I toward more favourable oestrogen metabolites), calcium-D-glucarate (which helps keep that recirculation in check), B vitamins and magnesium for the methylation step, and adequate fibre for excretion. See Liver Support and Digestion & Gut Health.

Working with the cycle and life stages

  • Vitex (chaste tree) — works "upstream" on the pituitary rather than acting like a hormone itself, gently influencing the signals that support progesterone in the second half of the cycle. Because it acts on that signalling, it's taken cyclically and builds over two to three cycles — the classic premenstrual herb.
  • Phytoestrogens — soy and red clover isoflavones bind weakly to oestrogen receptors, traditionally used to buffer the hormonal swings of the menopausal transition.
  • Magnesium & activated B6 (P5P) — cofactors for the neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, GABA) behind premenstrual mood, and for the luteal phase. See Magnesium and B Vitamins.
  • Adaptogens — because the stress axis and the reproductive hormones are deeply intertwined; sustained cortisol suppresses progesterone. See Adrenal & Nervous System Support.

Who may benefit

Women seeking to support hormonal balance — through PMS, cycle irregularity, perimenopause or menopause. See also Women's Health.

Frequently asked questions

How does Vitex work? It acts on the pituitary rather than acting as a hormone, which is why it's taken cyclically and builds its effect over a few cycles rather than working overnight.
Why does the liver matter for hormones? Because used oestrogen is metabolised and cleared by the liver — support that clearance, and you support healthy hormonal balance.
Is hormonal health really linked to the gut? Yes — gut bacteria can recirculate oestrogen that the liver has packaged for removal, so gut balance is part of the hormonal picture.
