Vitamins & Supplements

Vitamins and supplements exist because the body cannot manufacture most of the small molecules its enzymes depend on. Almost every vitamin works as a coenzyme or cofactor — a helper molecule an enzyme physically cannot complete its reaction without. B vitamins sit inside energy metabolism and methylation, vitamin D behaves less like a vitamin and more like a hormone that switches genes on and off, and fat-soluble vitamin E sits within cell membranes protecting their lipids from oxidation. When intake falls short, the reaction doesn't stop dramatically; it simply runs slower. Our vitamins and supplements collection brings together the daily multivitamins, single nutrients and children's formulas we stock, with a deliberate lean towards activated forms and wholefood-based formulations.

What to look for: the form matters more than the number on the front

Two products can list the same nutrient at the same dose and behave quite differently in the body, because what the label calls "folate" or "B12" can arrive in very different chemical states.

Activated B vitamins. Folic acid is not the form the body uses. It has to be reduced twice — first by dihydrofolate reductase, then converted through the MTHFR enzyme — before it becomes 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the form that actually circulates and donates methyl groups. Common variations in the MTHFR gene slow that final step. An activated folate, such as the Herbs of Gold Activated Folate 500 in this collection, supplies the methylated form directly and bypasses that conversion. The same logic applies to B6 (as pyridoxal-5-phosphate), riboflavin (as riboflavin-5-phosphate) and B12 (as methylcobalamin or hydroxocobalamin) — the forms used in the MTHFR Wellbeing Total B Drops and B6 Liquid, and in Herbs of Gold Activated Sublingual B12.

Format changes absorption. A sublingual B12 dissolves against the mucosa of the mouth, which sidesteps a stomach-and-intrinsic-factor pathway that becomes less reliable with age, low stomach acid or certain long-term medications. Liquids and drops, like the Total B Drops, suit anyone who struggles with tablets or needs a small, adjustable dose — which is why they are common in children's and infant use. A sustained-release B complex releases across several hours rather than presenting a large water-soluble dose all at once.

Wholefood versus isolated. The Whole Earth & Sea multivitamins in this collection are built on a wholefood base rather than assembled purely from isolated synthetic nutrients, so the nutrients arrive alongside the plant matrix they grew in. It is a different philosophy from a standard multi, not simply a stronger one.

Solubility decides timing. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), natural-source vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid are handled quite differently. D3 is fat-soluble and inactive as swallowed: the liver converts it to 25-hydroxyvitamin D — the form measured in a blood test — and the kidney then activates it. Vitamin E is the membrane's own antioxidant, sitting inside the lipid layer and intercepting the chain reaction of lipid peroxidation, then being regenerated by vitamin C. Both are best taken with a meal containing some fat. Alpha-lipoic acid is unusual in being both water- and fat-soluble, and functions as a cofactor in the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex — the gateway reaction that feeds pyruvate from glucose into the mitochondria.

Who may benefit

Broad-spectrum multivitamins are typically used where diet is narrow or intake is inconsistent, and men's, women's, over-50 and pregnancy versions differ mainly in iron, folate and the nutrients relevant to that life stage. Activated B formulas are often chosen by people who know they carry an MTHFR variation, or who have not done well on standard folic acid. Vitamin D is a common consideration for anyone working indoors, covering up, or living through a southern winter. Children's chewables and drops exist for the practical reason that a nutrient only helps if it is actually taken. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medication or managing a diagnosed condition, choose your supplements in consultation with your healthcare professional rather than by guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between folic acid and activated folate?
Folic acid is a synthetic, fully oxidised form that the body must convert through two enzyme steps to become usable. Activated folate (5-MTHF) is already in the circulating, methyl-donating form. For someone with reduced MTHFR enzyme activity, the activated form removes the step most likely to be a bottleneck.

Should I take a multivitamin or individual nutrients?
A multivitamin covers broad, low-level gaps across many nutrients at modest doses. A single nutrient is the tool when one specific shortfall has been identified, usually through testing or a clear dietary pattern — because meaningful single-nutrient doses are generally well above what any multi contains. The two are often used together, and your healthcare professional can help you work out which applies to you.

Does it matter what time of day I take them?
It matters for some. Fat-soluble nutrients — vitamin D, vitamin E — need a meal containing fat to be absorbed well. B vitamins are water-soluble and are usually taken earlier in the day, since some people find them activating in the evening. Minerals and some medications compete for the same transporters, so spacing them apart by a couple of hours is a reasonable habit.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Vitamin and mineral supplements should not replace a balanced diet, and may only be of assistance if dietary intake is inadequate.
