How it works — bile acids and cholesterol

The mechanism here is elegant. These strains carry an activity called bile salt hydrolase: they deconjugate (break down) bile acids in the gut, so that more bile acid is excreted rather than reabsorbed. Because the body synthesises new bile acids from cholesterol, prompting it to replace the excreted bile acids draws on the body's cholesterol — which is the studied route by which these strains support healthy cholesterol metabolism. It is a metabolic action, achieved through the gut, rather than a digestive one.
