Calcium, magnesium and phosphate play important roles in neurotransmitter release, nerve conduction and muscle contraction and relaxation. Together, magnesium and phosphate are integral in energy production.Calcium, magnesium and phosphate are required for muscle and nerve function. Magnesium and phosphate are needed to maintain energy production.
- Neuromuscular function: Calcium, magnesium and phosphate are required for healthy nerve and muscle function.
- Calcium plays a role in regulating the electrical polarity of the cell membrane and is necessary for the secretion of neurotransmitters at the synapse and neuromuscular junction.
- Magnesium has inhibitory and stabilising effects on neurons, and plays an influencing role in the release of neurotransmitters.
- Along with calcium and magnesium, phosphate is necessary for contraction of cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle.
- Energy production: The production and storage of energy in the body depends on the availability of both magnesium and phosphate.
