B Vitamins
The B-group vitamins are best understood as the spark plugs of metabolism — eight water-soluble nutrients that don't supply energy themselves but are the cofactors without which the body can't release energy from food, build neurotransmitters, or run one of its most important background processes: methylation. Because they're water-soluble the body stores little, so a steady supply matters — especially under stress, which burns through them quickly. Our B vitamins collection covers the group in both standard and activated forms.
Methylation — the process worth understanding
Methylation is the simple act of moving a "methyl group" from one molecule to another, and the body does it a billion times a second — to build neurotransmitters, switch genes on and off, process hormones, and keep homocysteine (an amino acid that's harmful when it accumulates) in check. The methylation cycle runs on folate (B9), B12 and B6. One conversion step matters more than most: folate has to be converted to its active form, methylfolate, by an enzyme (MTHFR) — and a common genetic variation makes some people convert standard folic acid poorly. For them, the activated forms (methylfolate, methylcobalamin B12, P5P B6) bypass the bottleneck and are the body-ready forms.
What the B vitamins do
- Energy metabolism — B1, B2, B3 and B5 are essential cofactors in turning carbohydrate, fat and protein into ATP. They don't stimulate; the machinery simply can't run without them. See Energy.
- Nervous system & mood — B6 is a cofactor for serotonin, GABA and dopamine; the B group as a whole supports a healthy stress response. See Adrenal & Nervous System Support.
- Blood & pregnancy — B12 and folate are essential for red blood cell production and healthy fetal development.
Frequently asked questions
Why activated B vitamins? They're already in the body-ready form, so they bypass a conversion step that some people (with certain genetic variations) perform poorly.
Will B vitamins give me energy? They're the cofactors that release energy from food, not stimulants — so they support energy without a crash.
Why does my urine go bright yellow? That's riboflavin (B2) — harmless, just the water-soluble excess being excreted.
