What is Chewable DGL?

A chewable form of DGL (deglycyrrhizinised licorice), taken before meals to support the lining of the upper digestive tract.

How it works — mucosal defence, not acid suppression

DGL works by a fundamentally different mechanism to acid-blocking medications. Rather than suppressing stomach acid, the flavonoids in licorice act on the mucosa itself — supporting the secretion and quality of the protective mucus (mucin) layer that lines the stomach and oesophagus and shields the underlying tissue from acid and irritation. Strengthening the barrier, rather than removing the acid behind it, is the basis for its traditional use in heartburn, reflux and gastric discomfort. It is chewed before meals so it mixes with saliva and coats the upper tract directly.

The "DGL" form

DGL refers to deglycyrrhizinised licorice — licorice processed to reduce glycyrrhizin, the constituent responsible for the blood-pressure and fluid-retention effects of whole licorice — so the mucosal-protective flavonoids can be used with a more favourable profile.

Who it may suit

People with heartburn, reflux, mild gastric inflammation or upper-digestive discomfort.

How to take it

Chew one tablet 20 minutes before each meal, or as directed by your practitioner.

Relief of mild gastrointestinal inflammation; reduction of abdominal pain, bloating, discomfort and heartburn; and relief of throat mucous-membrane irritation.

Precautions

Use with caution in hypertension, hepatic disease or fluid retention, in the elderly, and in men with a history of impotence, infertility or reduced libido. Practitioner monitoring advised beyond two weeks. Contains xylitol (may have a laxative effect).
