What is Selenium Yeast?

A selenium supplement in its principal natural food form — selenomethionine, produced by growing yeast in a selenium-enriched medium — for better absorption and retention than inorganic selenium.

How it works — selenium and the selenoenzymes

Selenium's biological value lies in its incorporation into a family of enzymes called selenoenzymes, where it sits at the active site. These include glutathione peroxidase — one of the body's principal antioxidant enzymes, which neutralises damaging peroxides; thioredoxin reductase; and the deiodinase enzymes that convert thyroid hormone T4 into its active form T3, which is why selenium status is directly relevant to thyroid function. Selenium is also concentrated in the testes and required for normal sperm production. Organically bound (selenomethionine) selenium is better absorbed and retained than inorganic selenium salts.
