What is Opti E Tocotrienol?

A vitamin E supplement of an unusual kind — it supplies tocotrienols (specifically delta-tocotrienol) rather than the alpha-tocopherol found in almost every other vitamin E product.

How it works — tocopherols vs tocotrienols

Vitamin E is not one compound but a family of eight: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Tocotrienols differ by an unsaturated side chain that lets them move more freely within cell membranes and distribute more efficiently through lipid tissue, and they are recognised as more potent antioxidants in those environments. Delta- and gamma-tocotrienols in particular have been studied for cholesterol metabolism — via suppression of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis — and for anti-inflammatory activity, actions not characteristic of alpha-tocopherol.

Why annatto, and why delta

This complex is sourced from annatto seed (DeltaGold®), the only natural source that is essentially tocopherol-free — relevant because alpha-tocopherol can interfere with tocotrienol absorption and activity. At 90% delta-tocotrienol it provides the most studied fraction.
