Carnitine performs one essential, specific role in energy metabolism: it transports long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which they cannot cross unaided, so they can be burned (beta-oxidised) for ATP. In effect, carnitine is the shuttle that carries fat to the cell's furnace; without it, fat cannot be efficiently used for energy.
